A former American Idol contestant and Ohio music pastor was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday after he was convicted of murdering his wife.
Prosecutors said Caleb Flynn, 40, killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, in February and he tried to cover it up by staging a home invasion and making it appear his wife had been killed by a burglar. During the trial, the jury heard testimony about the husband’s affair with a woman who had been an intern at his church.
Ashley was a 37-year-old volleyball coach and schoolteacher, and the couple had two daughters.
Flynn cried during remarks in court before he was sentenced. He issued an apology to his wife’s family and his daughters and admitted to lying, but he continued to maintain his innocence in his wife’s murder.
“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed in those vows,” he said. “I cannot apologize enough.”
Flynn said he regretted making “hateful” comments about his wife in text messages, saying he was “most ashamed” of those remarks and that he “loved her”.
He continued: “I have unfortunately lied about a lot of things over the last couple of years, but as I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying. I did not kill my wife. I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to.”
In addition to the murder charge, Flynn was convicted of felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
Flynn’s time on American Idol in 2013 was brief. On the show, he talked about his wife encouraging him to pursue his dreams and join the competition, and he sang for judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj, but he did not advance to the main competition in Hollywood.
During closing arguments, prosecutors told jurors that Flynn wanted out of his marriage when he shot his wife at their house in Tipp City, a suburb north of Dayton. When police arrived, the couple’s two daughters were home with their father.
He sent a text message to his lover the night before the shooting, saying, “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow,” prosecutors said.
During the trial, Alleigha Botner testified she met Flynn in 2022 while she was a 20-year-old intern at his church and had an affair with him for more than a year. She told jurors that Flynn said he hated his wife and had thoughts of killing her.
Jurors also heard AI-generated love songs that prosecutors said he made for Botner. Flynn didn’t testify on his own behalf, nor did anybody else.
The gun used to kill Ashley was not found at the scene, and his attorney told jurors that investigators found no evidence that her husband had fired a gun that day. Prosecutors said his fingerprints and DNA were at the scene and that his devices showed him moving around the house, even though he claimed he was asleep at the time of the shooting.
In court, a statement written by the couple’s 12-year-old daughter was presented, in which she directly addressed her father, saying: “You truly don’t understand how much you hurt my life and I wish you could feel the pain I have been through.”
The statement was read by Ashley’s mother, CNN reported. The 12-year-old condemned her father for refusing to admit guilt, saying in her statement: “I wish that you could come to understand that actions have consequences and you have a lot to pay,” Alyssa wrote. “The least you could do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome.”
The daughter said she did not plan to visit her father in prison, adding: “You had the best life ever, and you decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age.”
Ashley’s father said in court that the family had chosen to forgive Flynn, but he still urged the judge to hand down the maximum sentence.
