Key events
Swimming: The men’s 100m freestyle heats are in full flow, with the 16 fastest swimmers progressing to the semi-finals. Australia’s Kyle Chalmers took gold in this event four years ago and he’s up in the last heat, against Scotland’s Jensen Norris and Stefan Krawiec. Chalmers is fourth at the halfway mark … but is victorious with 49.06.
Edidiong Umoafia wins men’s 71kg weightlifting gold!
Nigeria’s Edidiong Umoafia claims the first gold medal of the day, finishing with a score of 319 after lifting 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk. England’s Jonathan Chin has to settle for fourth.
Athletics: Do you, like myself, imagine what poses you’d strike for the camera before your 100m heat? No, just me? OK. After nine heats in the men’s 100m, the fastest time belongs to Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati with 10.00. Two more heats to go.
A few stories from Sunday:
Swimming: It’s the men’s 200m butterfly heats, and England’s Edward Mildred – who won three relay medals at the 2022 Games – wins the first with a time of 1:57.99. What can Scotland’s Duncan Scott offer in the second? Fresh off winning the 200m individual medley, he edges past India’s Sajan Prakash to triumph with a time of 1:58.29.
Athletics: A first glimpse of the track at these Games. It’s, well, not a gorgeous day in Glasgow. We’re taking in the men’s 100m, and the third heat belongs to Wales’ Jeremiah Azu, bustling to a time of 10.10. He won 60m gold at the world indoor championships last year.
Weightlifting: Over in the men’s 71kg final, it’s Nigeria’s Edidiong Umofia who has taken control of the snatch section, lifting 147kg. England’s Jonathan Chin is competing in that final – he’s also a full-time doctor who balances 50 to 70-hour weeks with his training.
Preamble
Here we go again, with 27 gold medals to be won today. It’s the start of athletics and para athletics at these Games, and there’ll be plenty of focus on the pool with the 50m men’s breaststroke final as Adam Ramsay-Peaty tries to execute his “battle plan”. The first thing we’ll turn to is the men’s weightlifting, with medals up for grabs in the 71kg event. There’s plenty to get stuck into, and I’ll need all the help I can get – drop me a line with your thoughts, hopes, dreams, wishes, whatever you fancy.
