Preamble
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 1-1 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
Berrettini smacks the net but Dimitrov then sends a shot long with this match putting fans of the edge of their seat. Dimitrov hits the net twice and the Italian holds.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 1-0 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
The crowd are behind Berrettini but Dimitrov will aim to silence them. He does initially but the Italian levels at 15-15 but the Bulgarian isn’t backing down, taking the lead at 30-15. A lovely backhand puts him within touching distance of holding and he does so.
Tiafoe and Bublik are underway in their fourth set with Bublik holding his opening serving game.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
All Berrettini needs to do is hold his serve and he is sending this match to a deciding fifth set. He gets the first two points easily and Dimitrov hits a shot out to give Berrettini three set points. He needs just one, we go to a fifth.
Tiafoe and Bublik have not got back underway yet but the last set saw the American have nine set points and he lost every single one. Huge from Bublik to get that third set over the line.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-6 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
I could see this set going to a tie break, both players not winning a lot of defensive points at the moment. Just as I type that Berrettini strikes well to level at 15-15 and goes ahead with a beautifully weighted shot in the top corner. He marshals Dimitrov left and right and he has break point which he secures. That is massive.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-5 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
If Dimitrov can break here the encounter is over. The Italian wins the first point and secures the second, he doesn’t look like the pressure is getting to him at all. Dimitrov pushes a shot long but Berrettini can’t have a perfect game with a ball hitting the net. An ace sews it up and we’re level in the fourth.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-4 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
An ace puts Dimitrov 15-0 up and then Berrettini hits the net. Another mistake from Berrettini and the Bulgarian is looking likely to hold. The Italian can’t return the serve and Dimitrov wins the game.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-4 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
Berrettini must hold here, another break may be too much to come back from. He heeds the advice and gets to a 40-0 lead which he compounds. This could be a long evening.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-3 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
Dimitrov gets to a 30-0 lead and that last break of serve might have put an extra zip into his game to sum it up. Another fantastic shot from his forehand puts him within one point of holding and he does it.
Bublik has done it again, what a warrior. It was an absolute battle at the tie break in the third set but it is the man from Kazakhstan who wins it 13-11! Bublik is now two sets up against Tiafoe, who won the first.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 3-3 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
A long rally ends with Berrettini hitting a shot long and then he hits the net, the Italian gets a let off though as Dimitrov’s hit has too much on it. Blimey, that was quite the rally. Back and forth until Dimitrov makes a great run and sends the ball the other way to give himself break point. He doesn’t seal it on the first time of asking but he does on the second. WOW.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 2-3 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
Dimitrov coyly plays a forehand from a clipped return and then races to a 40-0 lead. An ace ends it but Berrettini still holds the cards here.
I haven’t forgotten about Tiafoe v Bublik either, they are still locked in a tie break which currently stands at 7-7.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 1-3 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
An ace starts the game and a powerful forehand puts Berrettini 30-0 up. A skilful exchange sees both at their best but the Italian comes off with the point and a net-clipped shot sees Berrettini hold.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 1-2 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
Dimitrov races to a 30-0 lead and a hold of serve here may give the Bulgarian a shot of confidence which he seems to need right now. Points exchange and Dimitrov ends the game cleanly. Berrettini raises the racket above his head in frustration but resists smashing it on the floor.
Tiafoe and Bublik are playing incredibly well. The third set has gone to a tie break, which Bublik currently leads 3-2. Bublik won the second set on a tie break, can he do it again?
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 0-2 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
A lovely sliced shot put Dimitrov 15-0 up and a double fault from Berrettini puts his opponent another point ahead. Dimitrov misses three returns and the Italian is 40-30 up which he sees out.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 0-1 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
Berrettini has a beautiful drop shot to level at 15-15, the Italian will be fighting every step of the way now after going two sets down and he is doing a god job of that so far. Dimitrov then sends a shot long but then the Bulgarian has a delightful shot down the right to level it 30-30. Dimitrov mistimes his shot to gift Berrettini break point and he takes it! WOW.
Dimitrov and Berrettini are back on centre court. The roof is shut and they are back underway.
Bublik’s serve has been incredible, 26 aces in this match. In the third set he and Tiafoe are locked at 5-5.
The roof will take eight-10 minutes to close and so we have about five-ish minutes until the centre court match is back underway. Dimitrov has a two-set advantage but Berrettini will have momentum after just winning the third.
There is one other match happening right now and it is betweeen Tiafoe and Bublik. They are currently 4-4 in the third set after the American won 6-4 the first set, while Bublik took the second 7-6 (7-5).
Dimitrov is frustrated as they are closing the roof, he is ranting at why they are doing it. Berrettini is heading inside while this is happening, Dimitrov is annoyed because he thinks they can play more games with the light. They are shutting the roof to turn the lights on. Weirdly, Berrettini has taken all of his bags with him which feels unnecessary. Let me bring you some news from elsewhere.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 3-6 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
At 15-15, Dimitrov hits the net and Berrettini is just two points from securing his first set of this match. But Bulgarian does so well to chip a shot past his opponent to level it 30-30, an ace puts Berrettini back in the driving seat but then he hits teh net. His frustration is abundantly clear, that should have been the winning moment for this set but we are at deuce.
Dimitrov has advantage with Berrettini sending a shot long but he rescues the break with a quick return. Again Berrettini sends a shot long from the back line, so unlike the Italian. Another rally and it ends with Dimitrov slipping, he manages to get to the ball but it hits the net. Berrettini takes the advantage but he scuppers the chance to hold. Finally he does it, is the comeback on?
Fritz beats Sonego
Taylor Fritz is through after a comeback win, the theme of day six of Wimbledon. He came through 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to go through to the fourth round.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 3-5 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
Dimitrov hits the net and it is clear the momentum is with Berrettini, the Italian must win this set in order to remain in the tournament. The Bulgarian though wants this wrapped up and he hammers a forehand shot down the left to go 15-15. Berrettini can’t return twice and a lofted touch sees Dimitrov hold.
Fritz v Sonego is at 5-5 in the tie break with both playing out of their skins to win this.
Dimitrov* 6-3, 6-4, 2-5 Berrettini (*denotes next server)
Dimitrov bends the ball around the net and it bounces in, that is some stunning tennis. Okay this is getting silly the level of tennis now, they both come close to the net and Dimitrov ends up in the splits but his shot hits the net. Berrettini races to a 40-15 lead and he holds. Game on.
Fritz’ match against Sonego has gone to a tie break in the fourth set, if the American wins it he will go through. It currently stands at 2-2.
Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 2-4 Berrettini* (*denotes next server)
On centre we join a tense atmosphere as Berrettini tries to get back into this and the crowd are loud as the Italian forces Dimitrov to hit the net. But the Bulgarian has his own skill and send Berrettini the wrong way to sneak past a forehand shot and the Italian hits the net. A frustrated grimace comes across his face but he uses it to eek out another point to send it to deuce.
Dimitrov takes the advantage but can’t execute to finish off the game so back to deuce we go. The Bulgarian’s smash shot shockingly hits the net and Berrettini now has break point and he does it. HUGE!
Sonego has gone 6-5 up in the fourth set, he has pressure on his shoulders as if he loses this one Fritz will go through.
Thank you Tanya and what a great few matches we are being treated to on this beautiful Saturday. As I join you Berrettini has gone 3-2 up in the third set, one he must win.
There’s a beautiful midsummer light on court 2 where Taylor Fritz has purred through a service game to make it 5-5 against Sonego in the fourth, Fritz 2-1 up. And with three men’s games in full swing, it’s time for me to hand over to Sarah who will take you through to lights out. Bye!
If you’re just joining this blog, there were a couple of huge upsets in the women’s competition earlier today:
A tie break between Tiafoe and Bublik to decide the second set. Bublik takes a 6-3 lead with a stinging backhand down the line and has three set points. He attempts an – optimistic – drop shot from behind the baseline to lose the first one, nets another shot to lose the second, but closes out the set with a dinky serve and volley and draws level One set each: 6-4, 7-6.
Back to centre, where Dimitrov is just starting to cruise. Berrettini plumps for a drop shot down 30-40 on his serve but meets the net. He’s been broken and Dimitrov now serves for the second set and a 2-0 lead.
He goes 15-0 up and Berrettini shrugs and fiddles with his shirt. At 0-30, Berrettini is arguing with his box. Dimitrov comes into the net and volleys to give himself set point and collects the cherry when Berrettini hits out. A tired looking Berrettini slopes slowly over to his chair while Gareth Southgate looks on – have a word Gareth. Dimitrov leads 6-3, 6-4.
Back to No. 2 court, where Taylor Fritz is serving to win the third set and go two sets to one up on Lorenzo Sonego. And with the sun dropping lower and becoming gentler, he does it as Sonego volleys into the net. Fritz has a drink and changes his shirt up 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
