Key events
81 min: West ham clear Andy Cannon’s delivery from the corner and Burton have a throw-in halfway inside the opposition half.
79 min: Good build-up play from Burton and a Lofthouse cross from the right is headed out for a corner by Max Kilman.
78 min: Alphonse Areola darts off his line and launches himself through a thicket of bodies Superman style to punch a Shade free-kick 30 metres up the pitch.
76 min: Good defending from Sibbick, who on two occasions resists the obvious urge to play a potentially disastrous backpass to his goalkeeper under pressure from Adama Traore, choosing instead to hold the ball up before picking out a teammate with a pass upfield.
74 min: Burton double-substitution: Andy Cannon and Kegs Chauke on for Evans and McKeirnan.
72 min: Ollie Scarles takes a corner that vaguely threatens to drift into the goal at the far post. Burton goalkeeper Bradley Collins takes no chances and palms the ball away for another corner. Nothing comes of it. West Ham have made a change: Freddie Potts and is on for Keiber Lamadrid.
71 min: Callum Wilson keeps himself onside with a curled run on to a Mavropanos ball from deep and unleashes a volley from a tight angle. Collins saves comfortably.
70 min: George Evans curls a cross towards Jake Beesley in the West Ham penalty area but the isolated striker is surrounded by three defenders.
69 min: There are also no replays, of course. Should the game finish all square, we’ll have extra time that nobody wants and penalties if required.
66 min: Mohamadou Kante wins a corner for West Ham. Scarles sends the ball into the mixer and there’s a mad goalmouth scramble before Burton can hack the ball clear for a throw-in. West Ham appeal for a penalty for handball, but none is forthcoming. Remember, there’s no VAR today.
64 min: Burton’s first half dominance is but a distant memory and it now seems a matter of when, rather than if West Ham will score. Callum Wilson tries to ferret his way along the byline under pressure from Tyrese Shade and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.
62 min: Jack Armer puts the ball out for a West Ham corner. Scarles sends the ball long and it’s put out for another corner on the other side. Scarles trots across to take that one too. His outswinger finds Mavropanos, who can’t steer his volley goalwards.
60 min: George Evans tries to curl a free-kick into the West Ham penalty area but fails to clear the first man. The hosts are not making the most of their corners, long throws or free-kicks at all.
59 min: George Evans drills a low ball towards Shade loitering near the angle of the penalty area and he loses possession. The corner goes to waste.
58 min: Burton attack down the left on the break and Tyrese Shade drills a low cross into the West Ham penalty area from the byline. His side win a corner.
57 min: Jack Armer is penalised for handball after falling to the ground while trying to shepherd the ball out for a Burton corner. He can have no complaints but decides to complain anyway.
55 min: Excellent defending from Lofthouse, who nicks the ball off the toe of Scarles before he can convert a low Traore cross that was deflected his way at the back post. They’re the same 11 players but West Ham are a completely different proposition to the rabble that trasipsed off at the end of the first half.
54 min: Magassa wins a free-kick near the halfway line after having his shirt tugged by Krubally.
51 min: Callum Wilson is tightly marked by Godwin-Malife as he tries to run on to a through ball, which he can only let run out of play for a goal kick.
50 min: Magassa slips the ball wide to Lamdrid, whose attempted cross cannons off the back of a Burton defender, Lofthouse. This is so much better from West Ham, although the bar could scarcely have been lower.
49 min: Ezra Mayers sends a cross into the Burton box from the left, trying to pick out Callum Wilson. The ball’s headed clear by Godwin-Malife.
48 min: West Ham’s players have shown more attacking intent in the opening three minutes of the second half than they did in the entirety of the first, a state of affairs that suggests they’ve been subjected to quite the rollocking from Nuno during the break.
47 min: Sent on his way by Magassa, Keiber Lamadrid charges through the centre towards the edge of the Burton penalty area, where he runs into traffic.
Second half: Burton Albion 0-0 West Ham
46 min: There are no further changes in personnel for either side as West Ham get the second half under way.
Half-time: Burton Albion 0-0 West Ham
It’s all square at the break. The deadlock remains intact but Burton Albion have been the much better team against visitors who haven’t played together very often but don’t seem to fancy their day out against League One opposition. Burton’s players will be urged to keep doing what they’re doing, while those of West Ham can expect a metaphorical boot up the collective backside from Nuno.
45+4 min: Walker-Peters collects a long Mavropanos ball from deep but is unable to beat the first defender with his cross.
45+3 min: Traore spreads the ball wide to Scarles on the left but his attempted cross is blocked by Lofthouse.
45+1 min: Shade is sent on his way down the inside left but his low cross into the penalty area is intercepted.
45 min: Another long throw from Shade but his firts one on the sunny side of the pitch. This one is cleared by Kyle Walker-Peters.
44 min: Tyrese Shade takes his fourth and fifth long throws of the afternoon in quick succession but they’re not posiing West Ham any problems, despite the distance he’s able to chuck the ball.
42 min: Walker-Peters gets the ball wide to Traore, who tees up Mohamdou Kante with a pull-back. The Frenchman balloons the ball high over the crossbar to sarcastic jeers from the Burton fans assembled behind the goal. At last, some signs of life from West Ham.
39 min: I’d forgotten about that rule, mainly because you rarely seeing it being enforced.
38 min: Callum Wilson unleashes a shot from a few yards outside the penalty area but fires straight at the goalkeeper, Bradley Collins. He’s penalised for holding on to the ball too long and West Ham are gifted a corner. Nothing comes of it.
35 min: Burton manager Gary Bowyer will be delighted with his team’s performance thus far, but will feel they should have converted their superiority on the pitch into superiority on the scoreboard. They should have had a penalty but aren’t creating enough in the way of clear-cut chances against a West Ham side who are giving every indication that they consider this trip to Staffordshire beneath them.
34 min: Magassa is penalised for a foul out wide on the left and Burton are given another chance to whip the ball into the West Ham penalty area. George Evans whips the ball into the gloves of the waiting Areola.
